If we thought we'd had it a bit soggy in Ilkeston, things were brought starkly into perspective by our visit to York. Malcolm and I had a run up to York yesterday after calling in at Meadowhall in Sheffield on the way for a little retail therapy. Following the bad weather over the weekend, some of the fields were flooded, but when we got to the city, the river Ouse was in the process of bursting its banks.
In the past, when we've been to York, we have enjoyed a walk along the river-side paths. No chance of doing that this year.
The basements of all the waterfront properties were flooded and as the water crept ever higher, the ground floors were also being pumped out.
Moving on, we had a good walk around the city centre, soaking up the Christmas atmosphere and indulging in a festive Black Forest Hot Chocolate from Costa Coffee. Absolutely delicious!
The streets of York were crowded to say the least, everyone enjoying the Christmas markets and the lights, smells, sounds and sights of the festive season. as always, The Shambles was packed.
It was beginning to get darker now, so a little more tricky to get photos, but it's always worth a try.
More to come....
