Valldemossa

Following on from Puerto de Soller, we took the coast road south to the pretty little village of Valledemossa.

The main claim to fame of this village is that it was home for a short time, to the composer Frederick Chopin and the French novelist, George Sand. They stayed at the beautiful monastery of Sa Cartuja.

The monastery comprises mainly 18th century buildings separated into individual 'cells' where the monks had their own living quarters and garden. They were supposed to be as self-sufficient as possible within the confines of their little garden plot and had little if any contact with each other. It was in these cells where Chopin and Sand stayed following the expulsion of the monks in 1835.
Valldemossa was also the birthplace of Mallorca's only saint, Santa Catalina Tomas in 1531.

Saint Catalina is revered all over the island for her goodness and devotion rather than any specific 'miracles'.

Valledomssa is extremely popular with tourists and can get very busy when the coach parties arrive and start to clog-up the small streets and cool, shady squares. Again, we managed to avoid the crowds and managed to find some free parking too!
